A free trip to Paris, a cheque for £100 and clothes worth £50 are prizes which would make most girls fluttery and excited

10th February 1956 - The Youngest Queen’s Scout
For two Pontefract Boy Scouts, Peter Bowers, of Kingsway, and Roy Taylor, of Southgate, both aged 16, Tuesday was probably the most important day in their scouting careers

The night of yesterday week was a frightening one for many people in local districts

28th April 1956 - Business With Pleasure
While returning from a pleasure trip to York on Sunday, members of the National Hospital Services Reserve gave first aid to an injured motorcyclist near Tadcaster and took him to the Castleford and Normanton District Hospital

22nd June 1956 - 20,000 Miners Invade Pontefract
On Saturday, for the second time in five years, Pontefract saw the massive spectacle of the annual demonstration and gala of the Yorkshire Area, of the National Union of Mineworkers

20th July 1956 - Coldstream Guards Thrilled The Crowds
A crowd, estimated at nearly 2,000, was enthralled at the Pontefract Barracks yesterday week, by the band and drums of the Coldstream Guards beating the ‘Retreat’.

20th July 1956 - Floods & Damage In Violent Storm
"A fantastic sight - a four foot wall of mud and water swirling in all directions" was how Wakefield Road, Pontefract, was described by an observer, Mr Charlie Harwood.

31st August 1956 - Visit by Young Germans Was a Success
After a fortnight reciprocal visit, in which they have been guests of members of the Pontefract Area Youth Committee, a mixed Westphalian sports party of young people left Wakefield for London on Sunday

28th December 1956 - Traditional Yuletide
For the first time for some years, Yuletide in local districts produced a traditional picture. Snow fell in Yorkshire on Christmas Eve and reached the Pontefract and Castleford area late on Christmas Day
