HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED
PONTEFRACT LIONESS CLUB
In
1977 Pontefract made history in the world of Lions Clubs International
by forming the first Lioness Club in the British Isles and Ireland.
Historically Lions Clubs were all male but having been in operation for
10 years in Pontefract the men had to recognise that they needed the
ladies and as we were not able to be Lions what else could they do.
Our
Mission is ‘to enjoy fun and friendship with like-minded individuals,
whilst serving the needs of our local community and the wider world’
and we are proud to say that the Pontefract Lioness Club have been doing
this successfully for over 28 years now.
We
have faced our challenges throughout the years, not least when the
Pontefract Lions Club closed down and we were left without a sponsor,
but team work pulled together and South Kirkby came to our rescue; then
again a few years ago when South Kirkby closed down and Castleford Lions
came to our rescue.
From
gardening to decorating to providing cookers and fridges and not
forgetting hospital transport, tea parties for the elderly and trips to
the Pantomime the Lionesses have always been there to help.
Getting
up at 7am to decorate Santa’s grotto in the pouring rain always seems
worthwhile when the bacon butties arrive at 9am; and the smiling faces
of little children when Santa’s there to greet them brings sunshine to
the wintery days.
More
recently, our funds have been able to help the Knottingley Drop-in
Centre’ to get up and running and provide equipment for the Teenage
Cancer Unit at Leeds Hospitals.
As
part of the largest service organisation in the world we are proud to be
Lionesses but most of all we are ‘Ordinary People, doing Amazing
Things’. So, If you are an ‘Ordinary Person’ and would like to
become one of the Pride why not contact us on 01977 704591.
