MONKHILL RAILWAY STATION

ADDED 10 APRIL 2006

In response to Mrs Briggs letter in the April edition of The Digest regarding the photograph of her father-in-law receiving a certificate for 46 years employment on the railway. I am pretty sure that the Mayor in the photograph was my uncle George Poppleton, who by coincidence was featured on page 18 in the Years in Focus section 1957 on his acception to become the next mayor of Pontefract. I was only eight at the time but remember the great excitement in our house when my parents were invited to the Mayors Ball and mum had to buy a posh dress to wear. They obviously weren't used to such occasions and she agonised over buying something suitable.

May I take this opportunity to say how much I enjoy reading The Digest, my Dad would have been your biggest fan. He loved nothing better than to talk about how Pontefract had been in his youth and had a wealth of knowledge about local history.
