ALWAYS LOVED PONTEFRACT
ADDED 18 OCTOBER 2006
I have
only just started reading The Digest magazine. In the October issue it
brought back many memories. By the way, I am 87 and I have had three
strokes so I needed to have my memory jogged!
Does
anyone remember the baker, Mr. Johnson? When he was made Mayor of
Pontefract he took all the schoolchildren to the pictures but my
highlight was the bag of buns we got when we came out of the cinema. I
had never had bought buns as my dad would not allow them. The film was
‘Rin Tin Tin’. Mr. Johnson was Mayor on two occasions but I can’t
remember that film.
I lived
all my school life in Kings Mead and went to Love Lane School which I
loved but then I was sent to Baghill which I never liked. The only good
thing was, Valley Garden’s was a liquorice field and we used to pull up
a root and suck it all the way to school.
I was
married during the war but I could not get a house in Pontefract and had
to get a flat in Featherstone. I have had a good life here and made many
friends but I will always love Pontefract. I have been back many times.
Mrs J. McNicholas
