FRIARWOOD LANE, PONTEFRACT

My husband and I have lived in Friarwood Lane, Pontefract, for forty years and would like to know if anyone can give us some information about what the area was like in earlier years. Both neighbours on either side of us have now deceased, but I can say that on one side, the neighbours were a Mr and Mrs Garnham who owned a sweet shop in Gillygate. On the other side lived a Mrs Kitty Dunwell and her husband, who was a joiner, but we would like to know more about the surroundings.

We do know about Ewbanks Liquorice Works which was adjacent to the bottom of our garden before the hospital took it over, and that directly across the road there was an orchard, again, before the hospital took over the land. We would however, like to know of any earlier things.

I must say that I enjoy your Digest Magazine and its contents.
