During the 1950s and early 1960s, as a youth and a young man I pursued my hobby of railway photography and took many hundreds of pictures in and around Pontefract. Although most of them were taken as pictures of steam locomotives and trains many of them show incidental features in the background that have since disappeared. It occurred to me that it might be of interest to submit a monthly portfolio of photographs illustrating some aspect of Pontefract’s steam railways and covering the whole of the local railway system over a period of several months.
