Pontefract Tanshelf Railway Station

Pontefract Steam in the Snow

Still at Tanshelf Station is pictured another Wakefield - Goole train drawing to a stop with a Fowler Class 4P 2-6-4T No. 42324 in charge. I think this was taken in the Spring of 1957 but my photographic records, kept at the time in an old exercise book, were lost many years ago. This must have been taken on a Wednesday or a Saturday because the figure immediately to the right of the engine is a King's School pupil going home on the 12.45pm from Tanshelf to (probably) Whitley Bridge or Hensall. In those days quite a few pupils came to both Pontefract Grammar Schools by train arriving either at Tanshelf or Baghill. In earlier years when the King's School was situated in back Northgate many would have used Monkhill Station. It will be noticed that the pupil in the picture is dutifully wearing his school cap. Of note also is the coaching stock; instead of the usual non-corridor coaches on such local trains as this, the passengers are being treated to mainline corridor stock.  Peter Cookson.
